Women’s World Cup Final 2023 – Football & Racing News – Star Sports

It all comes down to this. On Sunday, England Women face their date with destiny as they take on Spain in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final at Stadium Australia.

The Lionesses faced a tough semi-final, but they came through it with a 3-1 victory over hosts Australia to qualify for their first-ever World Cup final – the first for any senior England side since 1966 – after going desperately close in the last two tournaments.

It started well with Ella Toone unleashing a vicious strike into the top corner to give the Lionesses the lead in the 36th-minute. Australia weren’t to make it easy, though, and fought back in the second-half; equalising through a superb long-range strike from who else but Samantha Kerr.

This was to be England’s day, though, and goals from Lauren Hemp – who has been simply sublime in this tournament – and Alessia Russo ensured that it would be England to face Spain in this year’s Women’s World Cup final.

Sarina Wiegman faces a very interesting dilemma heading into this final of whether to stick with the attacking options that have got her side through the last two rounds or re-introduce Lauren James into the starting XI with her red card suspension coming to an end.

Spain will be looking to spoil the party for England on Sunday as they also look to get their hands on the trophy for the first time in only their third-ever appearance at the finals of a World Cup.

In the semi-finals, Spain got past Sweden – who have been the surprise package of this tournament – with a dramatic, action-packed seeing Spain take the lead through Salma Paralluelo, Rebecka Blomqvist then levelling the scores 90 seconds later before Olga Carmona won it at the death for La Roja.

Aitana Bonmati and Jenni Hermoso have been dangerous for Spain at this World Cup and certainly look like the main two players that the Lionesses will need to keep quiet on Sunday.

This will be a tough assignment for England, as was that semi-final against Australia, but I believe that they now have the momentum and will be difficult to stop at Stadium Australia on Sunday.

At 9/5, I am backing England to get the job done in 90 minutes and also tipping Hemp to get on the score sheet at 7/2 with starsports.bet.
