West Ham v Aston Villa – Football & Racing News – Star Sports

Both clubs face a quick 3-day turnaround from European fixtures as West Ham clash with Aston Villa at London Stadium, writes LEWIS WILLIAMS.

West Ham had a shocking start to 2024 and recorded a winless streak until Feb 26 when they won their first match of the year against Brentford, putting an end to an eight match win drought across all competitions.

That win acted as a catalyst for their subsequent away win at Goodison Park and despite an underwhelming draw against travelling Burnley, Moyes’ men corrected themselves against Freiburg with a convincing 5-0 display – a total contrast to their lacklustre effort in the 1-0 away leg defeat.

With the relief of a Europa League quarter-final spot in the bag, West Ham now look ahead to a tricky string of fixtures which includes Aston Newcastle, Tottenham and Wolves – all teams within the top half of the table.

Despite their poor form in the first period of 2024, the Hammers have already topped their points tally of last season’s 14th place finish by 3 points with 10 games left to play.

They actually had less of the ball most recently in their 5 goal triumph over Freiburg which tells you their finishing ability has had a turnaround since their eight match win drought which had a mere four goals.

The goals were flowing cosily that day and they looked back to their best which is certainly capable of putting it up to Aston Villa if the away side replicates their performance against Spurs.

Similar to West Ham, Villa arrive in London after a convincing second leg win in Europe against Ajax to seal themselves into the quarters.

However, their performance from four days previously against Spurs gives something of a cause for concern for Villa fans. Tottenham ran rings around their opponents at Villa Park and gave John McGinn a red card in the process which makes him unavailable for this fixture.

His absence joins a list of players who are also ruled out for this clash including Diego Carlos and Kamara, with doubts also present surrounding star forward Ollie Watkins and Jacob Ramsey.

Aston Villa have conceded 11 goals in their last five Premier League fixtures and it’s possible that their bubble might just be beginning to burst from their previous highs in the season. West Ham have been showing positive signs lately and could be turning a corner from a poor run of form so I’m happy to take 13/8 that the home side will grab 3 points today.
