The Sentry – Football & Racing News – Star Sports

G’day mates…

After an off-season full of talk of LIV and Rahm and money, it is nice to be able to put all that unpleasantness behind us and step into a new year of PGA Tour golf.

No matter what anyone says, the PGA will always be the tour of choice for true, diehard golf fans. The only thing LIV has done is manage to take some of the best golfers in the world off our screens. At the end of the day we, the golf fans, lose out in this war of money and power and that’s a bloody shame.

Anyway, onto brighter things, like the skies over Hawaii in the middle of winter. The PGA heads back to Maui and the Kapalua plantation course to kick off 2024 with the Sentry. It used to be known as the Sentry Tournament of Champions, where every winner of each of the PGA Tour events in the previous year would meet to battle it out for bragging rights going into the new year.

But the PGA have changed things up a bit and have increased the field to include the top fifty finishers in the 2023 FedEx Cup standings. The no cut format stays in place but this year it’s a fifty nine man field as opposed to around a thirty man field.

The Plantation courses at Kapalua in Hawaii are of the longest courses on tour, measuring 7,596 yards. But it’s also one of the widest, with many treeless fairways you could quite literally land a commercial jet on. But it’s not just about pure power. The table top greens mean a sharp short game is in order around the large green complexes. The winning score around here tends to be in the mid twenties under par, so expect birdies to be dropping thick and fast.

The only defence this course has is the off shore winds, which could make things tricky if they do whip up. The forecast is for some strong winds over the four days, so don’t despair if your man starts slowly because it looks like every player will have some challenging times this weekend.

Blue Horseshoe Loves:

Cam Davis – Currently

with starsports.bet

Davis has been playing in his native Australian Tournaments over the festive period and he’s been playing them well. Most guys will come into this tournament with a little ring rust. Not so Cam Davis, who will have also have had some time at home with friends and family to mentally recharge and refresh. Davis is a big bomber and this course, full of long and wide fairways will be right up his alley especially if the wind kicks up as forecasted. He has the power to make it to greens where many will not.

Max Homa – Currently

Homa finished tied for 3rd here last year, so we know he feels comfortable on the Kapalua plantation course. I’m expecting another strong year from Homa in 2024 with success in the major’s being a distinct possibility. Homa will want to set off as he means to go on and his consistently high level of play should see him feature here.

Sam Burns – Currently

Burns is a little hot and cold, but when he’s truly hot not many can live with him. He will be able to open his shoulders off the tee boxes on these super wide fairways which puts him way out there in the driving distance stakes and into position for opportunities in the form of birdies or better. I’m also going for Burns, because in a limited field event these odds may look extremely good if a player of his obvious quality gets off to a flyer.

Lee Hodges – Currently

Last year, after extolling the virtues of Lee Hodges and picking him for what seemed like an eternity, I eventually became exasperated with him and invested my money in others. Then he promptly went and won at 80/1 and I didn’t sleep properly for at least 3 months. I am not going to make that mistake again. This opening price in a limited field, no cut event, is a nice each way option for all you lovers of the exotic monster.
