Sheff Wed v Birmingham – Football & Racing News – Star Sports

Sheffield Wednesday’s position in the Championship table looks perilous, but they will be hoping to drag themselves closer to safety when they face Birmingham City at Hillsborough on Friday night.

Since the euphoria of promotion at Wembley last season, it has been tough for Sheffield Wednesday who have found themselves embroiled in a relegation battle for most of the campaign.

Since Danny Rohl replaced Xisco Munoz as manager, things have improved but the scale of the job has been brought back into sharp focus in recent weeks with Wednesday failing to win any of their last four games – which included a calamitous collapse against relegation rivals Huddersfield Town last week.

If Wednesday’s return to the Championship has any chance of lasting longer than just one season, they are going to need to start winning games – and quickly – as time is running out for Rohl’s men to get themselves out of this.

They will surely see a home fixture against Birmingham, who have also had their problems this season, as the perfect opportunity to get back to winning ways. It might be too early to talk of ‘must-win’ fixtures, but this feels as close as you’re going to get.

Birmingham City’s season began with a lot of promise under John Eustace, who incidentally looks set to become the new Blackburn Rovers manager, but decisions from above and a severe dip in form on the pitch has the West Midlanders looking over their shoulder.

Eustace was sacked in October due to a ‘misalignment with leadership’ and replaced by Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney who, to cut a long story short, was an unmitigated disaster.

Tony Mowbray has recently been recruited as the new boss to try and steady the ship at St Andrew’s, but the losing culture that seems to have set in at Birmingham will have a lot of fans worried.

They could also really do with a result at Hillsborough on Friday night. A win would increase their cushion over the bottom-three to a much more comfortable seven points.

With a lot at stake for both sides, I can see this being a slightly cagey affair. At 23/10 with, a draw looks appealing.
