Sanderson Farms Championship with BLUE HORSESHOE – Football & Racing News – Star Sports

After the Roman tragedy that was last week’s Ryder Cup for team USA, the new PGA season picks up again in Jackson, Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Only one man from either Ryder Cup squad is teeing it up at the Jackson Country Club. Ludvig Aberg must not have given it quite the nudge the rest of his European teammates did at the after party.

He’s the clear favourite this week in what is not a strong line up by any means. I’m going to sidestep him though because a) His price is ridiculously short and b) That’s a long old trip from Rome to Jackson and that was a big week of pressure off the young man’s shoulders. I cannot see how he won’t be just a little fatigued. As ever I’m going to look for value away from the favourite.

We came close to a win in the opening event of the new PGA season at the Fortinet Championship with Eric Cole, but eventually had to settle for another place as a fairly pedestrian Sunday saw him finish up in fourth place. Cole has been hugely consistent throughout 2023. He looks like a shoe in for the rookie of the year title and he will get that maiden PGA Tour win soon.

I’m sticking with him as he’s been paying his way with his places. This tournament, with its field lacking any of the big guns of the game, represents another golden opportunity for Cole to step into the winners circle.

I really like this kid. He had a fantastic Masters as the top amateur in April and turned pro soon after. He had an acceptable first season and he would have learned a great deal. I expect big things of him this season, which includes a PGA Tour win. I love his price this week. He’s one of these kids that the market hasn’t quite latched onto yet. He’s got more raw ability than most of this field. An attractive each way or top 10/20 finish prospect.

⛳ Lee Hodges – Currently

Hodges notched his first PGA Tour win late last season with an emphatic seven stroke victory at the 3M open. I had been banging on about the quality of this guy for the last year or two so it was nice to see that view justified, even if it was more than a little galling that I only jumped on him in running and missed his opening price. Hodges can be a frustrating follow.

He can leak shots and make a mess of his card on certain rounds, but he also has the X factor and has the game to put daylight between himself and the majority of the field as he did at the 3M. I think Hodges could kick on this year now that he has the pressure off him in terms of his PGA Tour card and I think this tournament could be the perfect event for him to start the new season strongly.

This is another young player with heaps of quality. He bagged his first PGA Tour win early in career at the RSM Classic in 2022. I thought he was going to secure his second title on a few occasions during 2023, but he just kept coming up short. To be fair they were top tier tournaments and very high quality fields. In this line up, I think he’ll expect to do well here this week and get out the blocks fast for the new season.
