PSV v Rangers – Football & Racing News – Star Sports

Both PSV and Rangers are within touching distance of Champions League football but the Dutch side could break Scottish hearts this time around and reach the group stages.

Last season a 1-0 victory for Rangers in Holland broke Dutch hearts and there’s a sense of Déjà vu after another 2-2 draw at Ibrox, but PSV had the better of that encounter and should be able to press home their advantage this time around.

PSV looked more put together last week, with the visitors turning the screw before Abdallah Sima’s opener, and they responded well to going behind twice. Rangers – who seemed unsure about trying to hit PSV on the break in transition last week – possibly played within themselves but PSV won the shot count 19-11, the corner count 10-5 and they shaded the xG count as well (1.62 to 1.21).

They will be frustrated not to take a lead into this second leg, but home advantage should give them great confidence; they haven’t lost a single game at the Philips Stadion so far in 2023 – winning 13 and drawing one of their last 14 contests in front of their own supporters – and they’ve also gone unbeaten since Sevilla knocked them out of the Europa League in February.

Rangers – comfortable 2-0 winners at the weekend against Ross County in a nice warm up for this game – cannot be underestimated but they were perhaps slightly fortunate to get the draw at home and the likes of Ibrahim Sangare, Luuk de Jong, Joey Veerman and Johan Bakayoko can put the Gers under pressure from the first minute in front of their home supporters.

1/2 about PSV in the match odds market with is short enough even if they’re deserved favourites, and the best bet might be to back PSV to win and over 2.5 goals at 11/10. PSV have scored at least two goals in five successive matches and should fancy their chances of doing so again, whilst Rangers – who we can expect to be a bit bolder on the counter attack this week – will fancy their chances of scoring.
