There are several eye-catching fixtures in the second Premier League match week and Champions Manchester City hosting Newcastle is arguably the game of the week.
City’s 3-0 cruise against Burnley last week set an ominous sign for the rest of the league but Newcastle more than matched that with a 5-1 demolition of a highly rated Aston Villa side at St James’s Park, sending a message to their rivals with a power packed performance.
Since then, tonight’s hosts have been made to work hard for their UEFA Super Cup win by Sevilla, drawing 1-1 on Wednesday before a penalty shootout win in a performance which will have given plenty of encouragement to Eddie Howe.
Whilst City were probably deserving of victory – they finished the stronger of the two sides, winning the shot count 23-8, the corner count 8-0 and the xG count of 2.07-1.14 – Sevilla managed to put them under real pressure with an aggressive high press as goalscorer Youssef En-Nesyri and Luis Ocampos caused havoc for City’s defence at times.
That should encourage Newcastle, who managed to overwhelm Villa last week when new arrival Sandro Tonali and Alexander Isak in particular were outstanding, and if they can repeat that level here then they’ll be capable of causing City problems.

The hosts – who would hope for a better performance from Phil Foden, and to get Erling Haaland much more involved – are set for a stern test here, which won’t be helped for the absence of John Stones and possibly Bernardo Silva, whilst Reuben Dias’s participation is a doubt.
Whilst we can expect this game to be close, it’s worth remembering how good Manchester City are at home. City have won 21 of their last 23 Premier League games at the Etihad, with no losses since December last season, and they scored two goals against every top eight team at home last season.
Newcastle have made huge strides in a short period of time and whilst their away record against the top teams last season was disappointing – failed to score in five out of six and lost three – they were better than those results suggested and can give City a game on Saturday.
Both teams scored in eight of city’s nine home games against the top half season – with Guardiola’s side winning seven – and that may be the way to go this time around.
