Leopardstown Thursday Preview – Football & Racing News – Star Sports

The racing in Leopardstown seems to get better as the week goes on with some cracking action towards the end of the week writes DAVY RUSSELL.

I’ve been busy with family stuff and checking up on the horses so have been watching on the TV.

There’s a fair bit of rain around so it will be interesting to see if it continues to fall over the next few days…

12.05pm Savills Maiden Hurdle 2m 4f

A pretty wide-open looking maiden hurdle where both Gordon and Willie introduce some nice-looking expensive types. Gold In The Rivers is by Walk In The Park and is a half-brother to Wait For Me. Jade De Grugy looks a lovely filly bought by Kenny Alexander from France. They paid a fair amount for her, but she looks to have a bright future. That said, both will have their work cut out to see off Butcher Hollow who has won his point, his bumper and made a good start over hurdles.

12.40pm Irish Daily Star Handicap Hurdle 2m 4f

A competitive handicap hurdle where you could pick a dozen and not find the winner. If you gave me one dart, I’d stick with West Away who won well the last day and may have a fair bit of improvement in him.

1.15pm Ballymaloe Relish Rising Stars Beginners Chase 2m 5f 70y

Only the five in the beginners chase where all eyes will be on Zanahiyr as he makes his debut over fences. He’s done it all over hurdles and has plenty of experience, but this isn’t the easiest track to start life over the larger obstacles. Fact To File was good the last day and has the benefit of experience over fences which counts for a lot.

1.50pm Jack de Bromhead Christmas Hurdle (Grade 1) 2m 7f 80y

A cracker of a race with Irish Point stepping up to three miles for the first time. He gave me a magical day over two and half miles in Aintree last April (pictured below) and certainly wasn’t stopping that day. He’s a lovely horse and will take some beating if seeing this extra half mile out. Home By The Lee will also relish conditions and the small field will help too as he likes being away from other horses and is likely to be steered wide. It promises to be some match.

2.25pm Savills Chase (Grade 1) 3m 100y

More Grade One action with arguably the pick of all the races over the entire festive period. Galopin Des Champs, Gerri Colombe and Fastorslow have all stood their ground along with the likes of Envoi Allen, A Plus Tard and Conflated. It will be some race. Galopin has to bounce back from the last day and has a bit to do to reverse the from now with Fastorslow. It’s a big day for Gerri Colombe and this is by far his biggest test to date. He looks like getting his conditions so that’s a big plus. If there is a bit of value in the race, I’d say it’s I Am Maximus who stays forever and will outrun his odds.

3.00pm Pertemps Handicap Hurdle Pertemps Handicap Hurdle 2m 7f 80y

Another fiercely competitive handicap where Gordon fires a fair few bullets. Absolute Notions is a classy hurdler but has a fair bit of weight here. If there’s one who could go well at a price, then it could be Foxy Jacks. He’s in grand form having won the cross country in Cheltenham the last day and looks on a fair mark.

2.05pm Guinness Faugheen Novice Chase (Grade 1) 2m 3f 100y

More Grade One action in Limerick where American Mike returns after a lovely start in Navan the last day where he beat Fact To File. He does have to take on Gaelic Warrior who looked unbelievable in Punchestown last month. I’d say he’ll take a fair bit of beating here.

Good Luck
