Simon Harris odds-on favourite to replace Varadkar as Fine Gael leader

The news of Leo Varadkar’s resignation from his post as Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach after seven years of power has ignited speculation over who will replace him, according to Star Sports.

Fine Gael politician and Current Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris is the early market favourite at 5/6 to assume the role as party leader.

Simon Coveney is next in the betting at 9/4, narrowly in front of Paschal Donohoe (4/1), and Helen McEntee (5/1).

William Kedjanyi, Political Betting Analyst at Star Sports, said: The people of Ireland have been left wondering who will take the helm of the Fine Gael party following Leo Varadkar’s renunciation from duties as both Prime Minister and Fine Gael leader.

“Simon Harris, Fine Gael politician and the current Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science looks to be the most likely candidate as the 5/6 frontrunner in the betting.

“Simon Coveney is Harris’s main contender at 9/4, marginally ahead of both Paschal Donohoe (4/1) and Helen McEntee (5/1).”
