No joy on Friday but I was pleased with Hoe Joly Smoke’s effort in the last race. As I said in yesterday’s blog we were dipping our toes in at this level and he put in a good shift behind what looked a decent winner. I’m hoping he can build on that as he still hasn’t got too many miles on the clock writes HARRY SKELTON.
Disappointing to lose Newcastle on Saturday and to be honest I think we need the weather forecast to be wrong to stand a chance with Newbury.
I see they are saying -5 overnight which doesn’t sound great and the course are having a look at 7.30am.
I’ve got a nice book of five rides so keeping everything crossed ….
Jay Jay Reilly
12.30pm Sir Peter O’Sullevan Memorial Handicap Chase ⭐ STARSPORTS.BET PRICES ⭐
Jay Jay Reilly kicks us off and he’s hopefully taken a step forward since his run at Kempton.
The ground was lively enough for him that day so something a bit slower should help him this weekend. He’s done a lot of work and it’s a competitive field so as long as the handicapper hasn’t caught up to him yet, he should run well.
1.05pm Coral Committed To Safer Gambling Novices’ Hurdle ⭐ STARSPORTS.BET PRICES ⭐
Theformismighty is a horse that I really like. He had a lengthy layoff but ran well on his comeback at Aintree, only getting a bit tired late on in the race. We hope he improves on that run but he’s not the finished article yet. We see him as a three-mile chaser in the future.
Get A Tonic
1.40pm Coral Racing Club Handicap Hurdle ⭐ STARSPORTS.BET PRICES ⭐
Get A Tonic goes back over hurdles after an unfortunate run last time out over fences at Warwick. She lost her way a bit and didn’t really progress last season after a good run at Haydock. Having said that, she’s running well at home and is showing promising signs, so hopefully she can put her best foot forward over hurdles. The handicapper has given her a chance so we’d like to think she can get back on track.
Punta Del Este
2.15pm Bet In Race With Coral Intermediate Handicap Hurdle ⭐ STARSPORTS.BET PRICES ⭐
Punta Del Este runs in the two-mile handicap hurdle after a good performance at Wetherby where he finished strongly and hit the line well. That run will certainly have helped ahead of this weekend.
2.50pm Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap) ⭐ STARSPORTS.BET PRICES ⭐
Midnight River (pictured below) runs in the main race of the day, the Coral Gold Cup, a race we were lucky enough to win with Le Milos last year. We’re always keen to get a run into him beforehand which was in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby, where he performed well for a long way but just got left behind after four out. He has come on nicely since then and this race has always been in our minds. He seems to be performing well at home, the trip shouldn’t be a problem and we definitely see him as more of a stayer now.
If he’s got enough pace early to get a good position that would be ideal and hopefully the ground doesn’t dry out too much. With the frost, the ground could harden up quite a bit but I don’t see that being too big an issue. Ahoy Senor keeps the weights down for a lot of them and he’s got a nice racing weight. He’s in good form as well so I can’t see there being any excuses.
