After sailing through the group-stages with three wins from three, England Women now move into the next stage of this summer’s Women’s World Cup with a last-16 tie against Nigeria Women.
Their third and final group match was their most convincing victory of the tournament so far as Sarina Wiegman’s side romped home to a resounding 6-1 victory over China thanks to goals from Alessia Russo, Lauren Hemp, Chloe Kelly, Rachel Daly and a brace from Lauren James.
After being largely frustrated in their first two matches, particularly in their tournament opener against Haiti, it really felt like that performance against China was the Lionesses announcing themselves at the tournament.
And, after pre-tournament favourites USA were knocked out by Sweden, England will perhaps sense an opportunity to go deep into this World Cup.

APR 2004 INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY England 0-3 Nigeria
JULY 2002 INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY England 0-1 Nigeria
JUN 1995 WOMEN’S WORLD CUP Nigeria 2-3 England
Nigera drew two and won one of their three group-matches, with both of their stalemates being goalless draws, and face a huge challenge getting into the quarter-final as a 10/1 shot with starsports.bet to beat England in 90 minutes.
In fact, it would be their first-ever victory at the knockout-stages of the World Cup, with the first-knockout round the furthest the Super Falcons have ever gone.
With the way England seemed to have clicked into gear, though, it is hard to see Nigeria progressing any further at this tournament. I am backing England to win to nil at 5/6 with starsports.bet.
