BMW PGA Championship – Football & Racing News – Star Sports

The BMW PGA Championship has finally arrived and LARA KUIPERS previews the action at Wentworth with a shortlist of four to follow this week on starsports.bet.

One of the most exciting tournaments on the DP World Tour schedule, the Wentworth Club event usually has one of the best fields of the season – and this year is no different.

Highlighting the list of players teeing it up this week is a trio of European stars in World No. 2 Rory McIlroy, No. 3 Jon Rahm, and No. 4 Viktor Hovland.

While the Norwegian star may be fourth in the world, after last month’s dominant back-to-back wins at the PGA Tour’s BMW Championship and the season-ending TOUR Championship, he’s arguably playing the best golf out of anyone in the men’s game right now.

McIlroy, Rahm, and Hovland are also joined by the nine other players who will make up Captain Luke Donald’s European Team at the Ryder Cup in Italy later this month.

One of the Englishman’s picks, Shane Lowry, is the defending champion this week after shooting a 17-under 199 in 2022 to hold off none other than McIlroy and Rahm.

Other recent winners include Billy Horschel and Tyrrell Hatton, who both won at 19-under par, in 2021 and 2020, respectively.

Rain is in the forecast for Sunday in Virginia Water, Surrey, so expect players who tend to shine in difficult conditions – like Matt Fitzpatrick – to rise to the top of the leaderboard during the final round.

While many of the other players to watch this week will be those running off the momentum of being picked for the Ryder Cup – like Ludvig Aberg and Nicolai Hojgaard – there’s also one player who could perform well for the opposite reason.

Adrian Meronk (pictured below) was largely considered the biggest snub of this year’s Ryder Cup after being left off Donald’s team despite winning at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club – this year’s venue – earlier this year. This week at Wentworth could be the perfect chance for Meronk to show Donald he made the wrong decision.

Lowry has a bit of momentum behind him heading into the week after a solid tie for third, just two shots back, at last week’s Horizon Irish Open, as well as being one of Donald’s picks for the Ryder Cup. He could be riding the perfect wave into a win this week.

⛳ Billy Horschel currently ⭐

Horschel has admittedly had a tough year, but you can never count the American out at the BMW PGA Championship, where he has notched three top-10 finishes (including a win) since 2019.

⛳ Matt Fitzpatrick currently ⭐

The 2022 US Open Champion could find himself at the top of the leaderboard by the end of Sunday, especially if Wentworth does see some rain.

⛳ Adrian Meronk currently ⭐

With all 12 European players teeing it up this week alongside Meronk, there’s no better opportunity for the 30-year-old to show Donald he might’ve deserved a pick.
