Australia Women v England Women – Football & Racing News – Star Sports

Following their 2-1 victory over Colombia in the quarter-finals, England now face their biggest test of the Women’s World Cup so far as they face hosts Australia in the semi-finals at Stadium Australia on Wednesday.

It was another tough game for England against Colombia, and they had to come from behind after a Mary Earps blunder in the first-half, but Sarina Wiegman’s side found a way once again to progress to the semi-final stage of the World Cup for the third time in a row.

Now, with just Australia standing in their way of the final, the Lionesses will now sense an opportunity to potentially win this tournament; their second in the space of a year after their European Championship triumph at Wembley last summer.

Lauren James is still suspended after her sending off against Nigeria in the round-of-16, but England’s strike-force should still cause problems.

It may have taken one of the most extraordinary penalty shoot-outs in history, but Australia have made it to the semi-final stage of a World Cup for the very first time.

England will be the Matildas’ toughest assignment of the tournament so far, but they will take confidence from the fact that they are the only team to have defeated Wiegman in her two years so far as Lionesses coach.

Sam Kerr, who English fans will know all about from her goalscoring exploits in the WSL with Chelsea, is Australia’s star player and will be one that England will be looking to stop on Wednesday.

Australia playing in front of their home fans will obviously give them an edge here, but I can see this being a very close and cagey game and potentially going to extra-time or even penalties. I am backing a draw at 2/1 with
