Divorce
What the Bible says about Divorce

According to the Word of God, it appears as though God does not recognize divorce.  A paper produced from a worldly court does not dismiss the marriage relationship in the eyes of God.

Matthew 5:31
It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his
wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
Matthew 5:32
But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put
away his wife, saving for the cause of
fornication
, causeth her to commit adultery: and
whosoever shall marry her that is divorced
committeth adultery.

"saving the cause of fornication" - Except for the cause of fornication. If she has already gone out and committed fornication, then the husband would not be causing her to commit adultery.  How could the husband cause his wife to commit adultery by divorcing her?  Because God does not recognize the divorce.  So in light of that, even though a couple may have a paper saying they are divorced, God says they are still married.  So with paper in hand, the wife may go get another partner, or the husband get another partner, but when they do, they commit adultery, because they are still married, in the eyes of the Lord.

A bit more explanation is found here:

1Co 7:10
And unto the married I command, yet not I, but
the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her
husband:    [here, the wife is forbidden by God to leave her husband]
1Co 7:11
But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried,  [if she does leave him, she cannot re-marry]
or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the
husband put away his wife.  [here, the husband is forbidden to put away his wife, or to (divorce) her.]
1Co 7:12
But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any
brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she
be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put
her away. [speaking to saved Christian men, if their wife is an unbeliever, and yet she is happy to stay with him, he is commanded not to put her away (divorce her) ]
1Co 7:13
And the woman which hath an husband that
believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with
her, let her not leave him. [speaking to saved Christian women, if their husband is an unbeliever, and yet he is happy to stay with her, she is commanded not to put him away (divorce him) ]
1Co 7:14
For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the
wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by
the husband: else were your children unclean;
but now are they holy.
1Co 7:15
But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A [saying that if the UNsaved marriage partner WANTS to leave their SAVED marriage partner, they are free to do so ]
brother or a sister is not under bondage in such
cases: but God hath called us to peace.

But God also does show a way out of a marriage if need be.  For example if a spouse is being mistreated or abused, he or she would have just cause to leave a marriage:

1Co 7:10
And unto the married I command, yet not I, but
the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her
husband:

1Co 7:11
But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried,
or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the
husband put away his wife
.
