Informational Articles: Fiberglass Boat Fading
(In Layman's Terms)

Your boat has a predator out there... it is the elements! And more than the elements overall, the sun is your worst enemy.  Gelcoat surfaces don't stand up too well against the harmful rays of the sun.  Though you may not be able to see it immediately, your boat begins the fading process the first day it spends out under the sun.

What can be done?

Your front line defense for protecting your boat from damaging sunlight is a good wax that has UV inhibitors in it.  Keep your boat waxed several times per season and you will do a great deal in protecting it.  Of course, over time you will still see some fading, but it won't be nearly as bad.

But what if it's already faded badly?

If your boat is already faded badly, all is not necessarily lost.  All is not lost anyway no matter what, but there are several things that can be done to restore a boat's surface.

Color restoration can be a little time consuming, and may cost a bit but there is hope. Our process of bringing a boat back to it's original color works very well on nearly all jobs.  We do not recommend that you go out and buy the color restorer products that are on the market today.  These products can do more harm than good, and few, if any work.  Once your boat is faded out, there is no replacement for the proper procedure.  We will be glad to get your boat back to where it belongs the right way.  Once the boat is restored, it will only be a simple matter of regular maintenance.
There are some boats out there that have had their surfaces worked and worked so much that there is little left of the gelcoat surface.  These boats need to be regeloated or painted.  But most typically, your boat can be restored.  We do free estimates and free consulting, so if you would like us to take a look at your boat's fading problem and go over it with you then give us a call.

What products do we use for power buffing and waxing?

For power buffing, we use Dave and Gary's Choice Utility Compound.  A rich, full bodied compound with progressive abrasives.  The abrasives break down into smaller particulates as the buffer wheel works them on the gelcoat surface.

For our protective wax coat, we use Dave and Gary's Choice Enduro-Shield Polish.  Enduro-Shield wipes on smoothly and comes off very easily.  New technology polish with polymers and resins create a slick wet look shine as well as a tough barrier coat to protect boats from the harsh elements. Works wonders on cars too.  Try it and see! www.boat-wax.net

Carver Gelcoat Color Restoring Video:
This 27' Carver was in really bad shape. Just power buffing would not bring the color back to this boat. We used our system, the one shown in our eBook, and this was the result. Notice the gray stripe - it actually turned out to be a blue stripe.

Crownline Gelcoat Color Restoration Video:
This Crownline was also badly faded and sun damaged, and had been neglected for years. Buffing would not do it alone. We used our system to restore it to new condition.
